Paper Books vs. E-Books

今のところこの『キャプテンカイの大冒険』の配布方法について、オンラインでのダウンロードによる電子書籍（ｅ－ｂｏｏｋ）と製本した紙の本（ペーパーブック）の二つの選択肢を考えています。電子書籍にすることで実際のネイティブスピーカーの発音が聞けるよう、音声を入れたり、他にもぬり絵などのアクティビティをダウンロードする、ということも可能になります。それに電子書籍のほうが低コストで仕上げることができます。もちろん寝る前の読み聞かせや、外出時のお供などにはペーパーブックのほうが良いのですが。

ペーパーブックのご要望にもこたえられるよう日本にもサービスを提供している出版社（製本会社）を現在探しているところです。例えばlulu.comやcreatespace.com（アマゾン系列）などです。

もしおすすめの日本の出版社（製本会社）をご存知の方がいらっしゃいましたら、ぜひコメントをください。

We're considering different options for offering The Adventures of Captain Kai as an economical e-book and as a published paper book. Obviously, a paper book would be nice to read to your children before bedtime or away from home. However, an e-book offers the option of including audio clips for easy translation and other fun downloads, like coloring pages. Also, e-books are inexpensive.

For all of you that want paper books, we're currently researching the best on-demand publishers that offer service to Japan. We're considering lulu.com and createspace.com (part of Amazon.com).

If anyone knows of a great on-demand publisher in Japan, please comment back to us.

現在のところマリッサのお気に入りのページは、キャプテンカイとサルのチートが宝探しの途中でサメにおどかされるシーンだそうです。でも、ご心配なく！次のページで２人は別の海の仲間に助けられます。

完成までもうしばらくお待ちください。タイのオムツを替えつつ、この本の仕上げをしておりますので・・・（笑）

I don't want to give away the entire story, but Marissa wanted everyone to get a quick peek into Kai's latest adventure, "On The High Seas". You'll have to download the final version of the book to read the entire adventure, but Marissa's favorite page to illustrate so far is one in which Captain Kai and Chito are scared by a shark during their search for treasure. Don't worry though. On the next page, they're rescued by an ocean animal friend.

Give us a little time. We're finishing this book in between Ty's diaper changes.

我が家の第二子、泰・凌人（タイ・リョウト）マッカーネルが
３月１３日の金曜日午後１１時２５分に誕生しました。
母子共に健康で、兄セイジは新しい弟にくびったけです。

Our second son, Ty Ryoto McConnell, was born just before midnight on Friday, March 13th. Mama Yasuko is recovering nicely, and big brother Sage is fascinated with his new little brother.

Behind The Scenes: Ocean Animals

シリーズ第一作目「キャプテンカイの大冒険－海の仲間たち」（仮題）がほぼ完成しつつあります。今日はこの一作目の内容やイラストをちょっとご紹介。

ストーリーは『お魚屋さんで買いもの途中、カイのお気に入りのぬいぐるみ、チートが水槽の中の光るコインを発見！宝探しと海の仲間たちとの出会いを求めて、キャプテンカイの大冒険がスタート・・・』というところから始まります。

マリッサの下書きはほぼ全て出来上がって、現在仕上げの真っ最中です。
私たち夫婦はこのストーリーによって、子供たちが海の動物たちの名前を英語、そして日本語で学べるよういくつかの課題について検討しています。

この第一作目でキャプテンカイは約１３種類の動物たちと出会う予定です。

"The Adventures of Captain Kai - On The High Seas" is nearly finished. In this adventure, Kai's stuffed animal, Chito, spies a shiny coin in a fish tank while Kai and his parents are shopping at the local seafood market. The hopes of finding treasure, and the chance to meet some new ocean animal friends, transports Captain Kai on a voyage full of excitement and learning.

Marissa has finished all the initial story sketches, and is currently finishing up the final illustrations. Brian is working quickly with Yasuko to make sure the story helps readers to learn about Ocean Animals in Japanese and English.

Captain Kai learns about 13 different Ocean Animals in this adventure. Here is a look at some of the sketches from "The Adventures of Captain Kai - On The High Seas".

マリッサ・サワー：米国ミネソタ州ミネアポリス生まれ。幼少のころからアーティストとしての才能を発揮する。大手企業（ターゲット、エディーバウアーなど）のデザイナーとして活躍。現在は独立しM Saurer Creative（エム　サワー　クリエイティブ）を設立。

３人の娘を育てあげ、長女はブライアンと同様子供たちに影響を与える教師として活躍している。

趣味は旅行、音楽鑑賞、自然の中で芸術的インスピレーションを見つけること。キャプテンカイのイラストレーターとして活動する傍ら、健康、美容、ファッション業界のグラフィックデザイナーとしても活動中。


Marissa Saurer grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Since childhood she has perfected her skills as an artist. She has worked professionally for companies like Target and Eddie Bauer until she started her own company, M Saurer Creative. She also paints fine art in her leisure time.

Marissa has raised three beautiful and creative daughters. Like Brian, her oldest daughter is a teacher who enjoys inspiring young children.

She enjoys travel, music, and finding artistic inspiration in nature. Besides illustrating the ongoing adventures of Captain Kai, Marissa still finds time to help businesses in the Health, Beauty, and Fashion industries with their creative needs.

著者について | About the Author

ブライアン・マッカーネル：７年前より米国カリフォルニア州サンフランシスコベイエリアにて幼稚園の教師として幼児英語教育に携わり現在に至る。教師になる以前は日本で約２年間英会話講師として子供から大人までさまざまなレベルの生徒に英語を教える。

日本滞在中に現在の妻靖子と出会い結婚。２００６年７月には長男靖士・海（セイジ・カイ）が誕生。今年３月には次男泰・凌人（タイ・リョウト）が誕生予定。

２００９年夏には日本移住も計画中。

家族や親戚が世界各国に点在していることもあり、様々な文化の影響を受けるファミリーとして、日本やアメリカおよびその他の異文化の大切さを子供たちに伝えるよう努力している。この「キャプテンカイの大冒険」を通して、家族だけでなくたくさんの子供たちに語学を学ぶことの楽しさをを伝えられればと願っている。

For the past seven years, Brian McConnell has taught Kindergarten in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, USA. Before teaching in the United States, Brian taught conversational English courses to adults and children in Yokohama, Japan, for almost 2 years.

While living in Japan, Brian met the love of his life, Yasuko. After moving back to the United States, Brian and Yasuko married and began building their family. In July of 2006, their first son, Sage Kai McConnell, was born. Their second son, Ty McConnell, is due to be born in March of 2009.

They plan to move back to Japan in the Summer of 2009.

As a multicultural family, they enjoy preserving the cultural traditions from Japan and America. With family members living in other parts of the world, they strive to learn about cultures beyond their own. Brian and Yasuko stress the importance of making learning fun. "The Adventures of Captain Kai" is Brian's way of sharing some of the enjoyment he's had with his family and students, learning Japanese and English.
